Component Lubrication Guide

Regular lubrication of moving components is essential to ensure smooth movements, reduce noise, and minimize wear and tear on your 3D printer's parts.

Smooth Rods and Bearings

Frequency: Every 200-300 printing hours.

These are the components that allow the X, Y, and Z axes to move.

  1. Cleaning: Before lubricating, always wipe the smooth rods with a paper towel to remove dust and old lubricant residue.
  2. Application: Apply a small amount of quality lubricant (lithium-based grease is a good option) directly onto the smooth rods.
  3. Distribution: Move the extruder carriage (X-axis) and the bed (Y-axis) back and forth along their entire path several times. Do the same for the Z-axis, moving it up and down. This helps to spread the lubricant evenly and work it into the bearings.
  4. Advanced Maintenance: If you feel an axis is still not sliding smoothly, you may need to remove the bearings to clean and lubricate them internally.

Extruder Gears

The metal gears that mesh together to push the filament also benefit from lubrication to reduce friction and noise.

  • Application: Use a lithium-based grease to lubricate the section where the gears mesh.
  • Warning: Do not use oil, as it can spread to the area where the filament passes, potentially contaminating it.
