Getting Started With LightBurn

This guide covers the initial setup and the creation of your first project in LightBurn, based on the official tutorial.

1. Laser Setup

  • Connection: Ensure your laser is powered on and plugged into your computer via USB.
  • Device Profile: The first time you open LightBurn, use the Find My Laser option to scan for your machine and import settings.
  • Drivers: If your laser is not detected, you may need to obtain drivers from the manufacturer.
  • Home: If your machine has limit switches, enable the Auto Home laser on Startup option.

2. Interface and Tools

  • Layout: You can move or reorder windows and toolbars. To return to the original state, go to the Window menu and click Reset to Default Layout.
  • Creating Shapes:
    • Rectangle: Select the rectangle tool from the left toolbar and drag in the workspace.
    • Circle: Select the ellipse tool and hold the Shift key while dragging to create a perfect circle.
    • Resize: Use the handles around the shape or enter specific width and height values in the top toolbar.

3. Cuts and Layers

  • Operation Modes:
    • Fill: Completely fills in any closed shape, typically used for engraving text or logos.
    • Line: Outlines the shape, used for cutting or detailing.
  • Colors: Assign different colors from the bottom palette to separate different tasks (e.g., one color for engraving, another for cutting).
  • Speed and Power: These settings are unique to each laser and material. Start with the manufacturer's recommended settings.

4. Adding Text

  • Click the A icon in the left toolbar to place the text cursor and type.
  • Customize the font, size, and spacing using the options in the top toolbar.
  • Assign a different color layer and set the mode to Fill so the text is engraved.

5. Execution Order and Preview

  • Order: In the Cuts and Layers window, drag layers so that engraving (Fill) happens before the final cut (Line) to prevent the piece from shifting.
  • Preview: Always check the Preview window at the top to simulate the job and ensure the output matches your expectations before using material.

6. Running the Job

  • Focus: Set the correct focal distance between the laser and the top of your material.
  • Frame: Click the Frame button in the laser window to have the laser travel the bounds of your project to verify positioning.
  • Start: Once verified, click Start to begin running the job.
